At the end of June, the tomatoes start to ripen in the arid, sun-blessed islands of Malta and Gozo and Magro Brothers are all set for the much-awaited start of their tomato production. As happens every year, traditionally the youngest member of the Magro family throws in the first tomato. This year, 6-month old Mikela, daughter of Christian and Charmaine Magro, was given the honour of kicking-off the season.

As tons of tomatoes arrive from all over the islands, it is quite a sight to watch the tomatoes being washed and prepared for their journey of fulfillment. After being carefully chosen as the reddest and juiciest tomatoes, these are then peeled, chopped and pressed to produce pulp, juice, kunserva, ketchup or sauces. Magro Brothers buy over 80% of the market’s produce – hardly ever enough considering it takes 10 sun-ripe tomatoes to produce a can of Mayor Tomato Pulp!

The season lasts till around the end of August and preparatory work for the following season commences immediately. Should you want to visit the plant to watch the whole tomato process, please call us on Freephone 80075533 or email us on customercare@magro.com.mt ... it’s well worth it!
